The purpose of this pamphlet is to briefly examine what Mormons consider "latter-day revelation" which they claim is far superior to the Bible. The Mormon Church has four books of scripture referred to as the "standard works." The King James Version of the Bible is accepted as the Word of God "as far as it is translated correctly" (8th Article of Faith of the LDS Church). The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price are accepted without any qualifications whatsoever. Although every good Mormon will claim to have a testimony that the Book of Mormon is true, and millions of prospective converts are challenged to read the Book of Mormon and pray about its truthfulness; very few people are aware of the fundamental doctrines contained within it which are diametrically OPPOSED to current Mormon theology. Yet, Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, insists that the Book of Mormon is the most accurate book in all the earth. He records this statement in his journal: "I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man could get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 194) Although the bulk of Mormon scripture is claimed to have been given through Joseph Smith by divine aid, there exists a maze of contradictions between the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. Much of this can be attributed to Joseph Smith's changing theology that is reflected in his writings. No doubt if Joseph Smith was inspired by God we could expect to see harmony and unity within his writings; but instead we find confusion and change from beginning to end. Joseph Fielding Smith, who became the 10th prophet of the Mormon Church, makes these statements about Joseph Smith: "If his claims and declarations were built upon fraud and deceit, there would appear many errors and contradictions, which would be easy to detect....The world has been unable to place a finger upon anything that is inconsistent, or out of harmony in the revelations to Joseph Smith, with that which has been revealed before, or predicted by the prophets and the Lord himself." (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. I, pp. 188, 189) The following will demonstrate that Joseph Fielding Smith's statement about the reliability of Joseph Smith's revelations is certainly in error. There are many contradictions and inconsistencies which lie within the pages of Mormon scripture which point to the fact of the man made nature of the system of Mormonism. ONE GOD OR MANY GODS? The Book of Mormon: "And Zeezrom said unto him: Thou sayest there is a true and living God? "And Amulek said: Yea, there is a true and living God. "Now Zeezrom said: Is there more than one God? "And he answered, No." (Alma 11:26-29) The Pearl of Great Price: "...I am the Lord God Almighty .... there is no God beside me .... " (Moses 1:3,6) The Doctrine and Covenants: "...Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them..., they have entered into their exaltation, according to the promises, and sit upon thrones, and are not angels but are gods." (Sec. 132:20, 37) GOD IS A SPIRIT OR GOD HAS A BODY? The Book of Mormon: "And then Ammon said: Believest thou that there is a Great Spirit? "And he said, Yea. "And Ammon said: This is God. And Ammon said unto him again: Believest thou that this Great Spirit, who is God, created all things which are in heaven and in the earth?" (Alma 18:26-28) The Doctrine and Covenants: "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit .... "(Sec. 130:22) CREATION -- ONE GOD OR MANY GODS? The Book of Mormon: "...for there is a God, and he hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon." (2 Nephi 2:14) The Pearl of Great Price: "And I, God, said: Let there be light; and there was light. "And I, God, saw the light; and that light was good. And I, God, divided the light from the darkness." (Moses 2:3, 4) The Pearl of Great Price: "And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light; and there was light. "And they (the Gods) comprehended the light, for it was bright; and they divided the light, or caused it to be divided, from the darkness." (Abraham 4:3, 4) POLYGAMY -- AN ABOMINATION OR A COMMANDMENT? The Book of Mormon: "For behold, thus saith the Lord: This people begin to wax in iniquity; they understand not the scriptures, for they seek to excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things which were written concerning David, and Solomon his son. "Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord." (Jacob 2:23-24) The Doctrine and Covenants: "Verily, thus saith the Lord...you have inquired of my hand to know and understand wherein I, the Lord, justified my servants... David and Solomon, ...as touching the principle and doctrine of having many wives and cocubines .... "David's wives and concubines were given unto him of me .... " (Sec. 132:1, 39) GOD CANNOT LIE OR GOD COMMANDS LYING? The Book of Mormon: "And he answered: Yea, Lord, I know that thou speakest the truth, for thou art a God of truth, and canst not lie." (Ether 3:12) The Pearl of Great Price: "...the Lord said unto me: Behold, Sarai, thy wife, is a very fair woman to look upon; "Let her say unto the Egyptians, she is thy sister, and thy soul shall live. "And it came to pass that I, Abraham, told Sarai, my wife, all that the Lord had said unto me -Therefore say unto them, I pray thee, thou art my sister .... "(Abraham 2:22, 24, 25) Interestingly, the Book of Mormon condemns liars: "Wo unto the liar, for he shall be thrust down to hell." (2 Nephi 9:34) THERE IS OR IS NOT A SECOND CHANCE AFTER DEATH? The Book of Mormon: "For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God;... "For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his;... and the devil hath all power over you and this is the final state of the wicked." (Alma 34:32, 35) The Doctrine and Covenants: "...this most glorious of all subjects belonging to the everlasting gospel, namely, the baptism for the dead;...For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect..." (Sec. 128:17-18) Mormon Apostle. Bruce R. McConkie gives this information about the opportunity to hear the gospel after death and the vicarious works that must be done: "By accepting the gospel in the spirit world, and because the ordinances of salvation and exaltation are performed vicariously in this world, the worthy dead can become heirs of the fulness of the Father's kingdom." (Mormon Doctrine, p. 673) PUNISHMENT -- ETERNAL OR TEMPORARY? The Book of Mormon says that eternal punishment is as "eternal as the life of the soul": "Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment, which also was eternal as the life of the soul should be, affixed opposite to the plan of happiness, which was as eternal also as the life of the soul." (Alma 42:16) The Doctrine and Covenants: "Nevertheless, it is not written that there shall be no end to this torment, but it is written endless torment." (Sec. 19:6) Joseph Fielding Smith, who became the 10th Prophet of the LDS Church, gives this explanation: "Eternal punishment, or endless punishment, does not mean that those who partake of it must endure it forever .... A man may partake of endless torment, and when he has paid the penalty for his transgression, he is released, but the punishment remains and awaits the next culprit, and so on forever." (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 2, p. 228) GOD'S DECREES ARE UNALTERABLE -- YES OR NO? The Book of Mormon: "Now, the decrees of God are unalterable;..." (Alma 41:8) The Doctrine and Covenants: "Wherefore I, the Lord, command and revoke, as it seemeth me good;...Wherefore, I revoke the commandment...and give a new commandment .... "(sec. 56:4, 5) MORMON PROPHETS CONTRADICT MORMON SCRIPTURE The Book of Mormon is very plain in its teaching that God has always been God and is "unchangeable": "For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity." (Moroni 8:18) Fourteen years after Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon he began to teach just the opposite: "... for I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. ! will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you my see." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345) The Book of Mormon also repeatedly states that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are "one God": "...And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen." (2Nephi 31:21) Again, Joseph Smith contradicts Mormon scripture by proclaiming this about the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: "...these three constitute three distinct personages and three Gods." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 370) Another major doctrine where LDS prophets contradict Mormon scripture is concerning the birth of Jesus. The Book of Mormon indicates that the Holy Ghost was responsible for the virgin birth: "... she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God." (Alma 7:10) Strange as it may seem, President Brigham Young preached a sermon in the tabernacle in Salt Lake City where he denied that Jesus was "begotten by the Holy Ghost": "Now, remember from this time forth, and for ever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p. 51) Brigham Young became so zealous in proclaiming that Adam progressed to Godhood on another planet before he came to this earth that he refused to believe that "Adam was made of the dust of this earth" even though Mormon scripture says it was so. The Pearl of Great Price states: "And l, the Lord God, formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul .... " (Moses 3:7) The Doctrine and Covenants agrees: "We are to understand that as God made the world.., and also formed man out of the dust of the earth ...." (Sec. 77:12A) Even the Book of Mormon agrees: "...the Lord God sent our first parents forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground, from whence they were taken .... "(Alma 42:2) On this topic, Brigham Young denies ALL latter-day revelation by proclaiming: "You believe Adam was made of the dust of this earth. This I do not believe, though it is supposed that it is so written in the Bible; but it is not, to my understanding. You can write that information to the States, if you please -- that I have publicly declared that I do not believe that portion of the Bible as the Christian world do. I never did, and I never want to. What is the reason I do not? Because I have come to understanding, and banished from my mind all the baby stories my mother taught me when I was a child." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 6) Years later, Brigham Young made the following unbelievable statement: " I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 95) CONCLUSION A wise, truth seeking individual can only come to one conclusion: Mormonism is man made and not from God. Why not put your trust in the Holy Word of God, the Bible? It alone has "all things that pertain unto fife and godliness" (II Peter 1:3). The Psalmist wrote: "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man" (Psalms 118:8). Jesus Himself said in John 8:32: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Why not come to the one who offers this personal invitation: "...I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John 6:35) "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
